The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply (MAFF) is responsible for the development and implementation of policies that support Malta’s agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, and food supply sectors. The Ministry works to strengthen these sectors through sustainable development, innovation, and strategic investment, while ensuring their long-term resilience and competitiveness.

The Ministry collaborates closely with farmers, fishers, aquaculture operators, public entities and other stakeholders to promote responsible resource management, encourage rural development and support the continued growth of primary production. It also facilitates the implementation of national and European Union policies and programmes that contribute to the advancement of these sectors.

Food supply forms an integral part of the Ministry’s remit. The Ministry is committed to promoting a resilient and sustainable food system that contributes to national food security, supports the continuity of food supply chains and reinforces public confidence in the availability and integrity of food across the Maltese Islands.

Through evidence-based policymaking, consultation and stakeholder engagement, the Ministry strives to address current challenges while identifying opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth. It also supports initiatives that enhance productivity, encourage investment, and strengthen Malta’s capacity to meet future agricultural, fisheries and food supply needs.
