Minister Anton Refalo

Born in Gozo in 1956 to Carmelo and Georgia, Dr Anton Refalo is a lawyer by profession, having graduated in Law in 1980.

Dr Refalo has contested every General Election in Malta on behalf of the Labour Party since 1987 and has consistently been elected on the first count. He served as Parliamentary Secretary for Gozo between 1996 and 1998, during the Labour administration.

Following the Labour Party’s electoral victory in 2013, he was appointed Minister for Gozo, a position he held until 2017. In May 2018, he was appointed Chairman of Heritage Malta.

In 2020, Dr Anton Refalo was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights. In the current legislature, he was reappointed as Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply, where he continues to lead the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen Malta’s agriculture, fisheries and food supply sectors while promoting sustainability, innovation and food security.

Dr Refalo remains actively engaged both in Parliament and in the legal profession. He regularly participates in local and international political debates, tables parliamentary questions, contributes to the local media, and takes part in conferences and seminars addressing national, European and regional issues.

Beyond politics, Dr Refalo is a well-known art collector and has a keen appreciation for music and culture. He also served as President of the Gozo Football Association. He enjoys spending time with family and friends and travelling, particularly within Europe and the Mediterranean. He has a deep affection for Gozo, its natural heritage and unique landscapes, and is a strong supporter of Maltese and Gozitan voluntary organisations and NGOs.

Anton is married to Michelina, and together they have two children, André and Simona.
